SUMMARY:The Invisible Gorilla in the Courtroom: Managing Hydrogeologic Risks...
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: The Invisible Gorilla in the Courtroom: Managing Hydrogeologic Risks in the Wake of the SCOTUS Functional Equivalent (225 mins.) \nWebinar presenter \nThomas Gillespie\, P.G.\, Senior Professional Geologist \nGilmore and Associates \nConsulting hydrogeologists are convinced they are uniquely possessed of the definitive conceptualization of hydrogeologic conditions at any site…and so is every other hydrogeologist representing every other party on those same sites. Risks to regulated parties escalate when the arbiter of the hydrogeologists’ disparate opinions is a non-geologist regulator\, or\, even worse\, a judge. To such arbiters\, the science of hydrogeology is a black box\, into which the recent SCOTUS Functional Equivalency Test has cast an even deeper umbra. Project uncertainties can be reduced by consulting hydrogeologists when they synthesize their esoteric and indirect measurements into reasoned\, compliant\, and ultimately defensible strategies defined and directed in cooperation with corporate environmental managers and attorneys. \nThis web-based course provides consulting hydrogeologists\, corporate environmental managers and environmental attorneys with jargon-free explanations of the decision-relevant hydrogeologic factors they can leverage into integrated technical/regulatory strategies to achieve successful closures of environmental investigation and remediation cases and defensible technical cases in the event of legal challenges. \nLevel: Intermediate – Course presumes knowledge of environmental requirements and regulations and a working familiarity with hydrogeology. \nWho should attend: Licensed professional geologists\, professional environmental engineers\, corporate environmental managers\, environmental attorneys. \nAbout our presenter: Thomas D. Gillespie\, P.G.\, Senior Professional Geologist (Gilmore & Associates) – licensed professional geologist providing risk reduction consultation to geo-resource-based businesses with expertise in water resource management\, mining\, oil & gas exploration\, engineering geology\, environmental risk management & investigation\, and geologic hazard assessment & mitigation. \nTwo consecutive six-year terms as a Gubernatorial appointee on the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers\, Land Surveyors and Geologists\, including two terms as President of that Board. Representative for Pennsylvania on the National Association of State Boards of Geology as a subject matter expert in structural geology\, hydrogeology and engineering geology. Qualified expert witness in groundwater and contaminant fate and transport\, oil and gas and mining operations\, land use\, stormwater management\, geologic hazards\, in all levels of the court system. Institutional expert consultation to government agencies\, including appointment to the Department of the Army’s Technical Assistance Team. \nAdjunct professor of geology since 1988; continuing education instructor for various organizations.
